The 2018 AL-APSE conference will be held in Birmingham at the Hyatt Regency, The Wynfrey Hotel. This sopthiscated hotel is connected to the Riverchase Galleria and is a chic, upscale hotel in the heart of Hoover. This former Wynfrey Hotel blends traditional Southern hospitality with all the modern conveniences of home. Alabama APSE and the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities hosted another successful conference in June at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. More than 250 individuals attended the conference that included nationally renowned speakers and trainers. The headliner included Dr. Richard Pimentel, a disability rights activist who developed significant training materials aimed to help employers integrate persons with disabilities into the workplace, and was a strong advocate for the passage of the American with Disabilities Act. His life story is recounted in the film Music Within. He is today a senior partner of Milt Wright & Associates, Inc.

Mark Your Calendar, JULY 27-29, 2011 - Alabama APSE and the Alabama Council for
Developmental Disabilities will again co-host a conference and training event at the Marriott
Renaissance Hotel and Spa at the Convention Center in Montgomery. Preliminary plans call
for an exciting line up of speakers and trainers for this event. Conference information will be
listed at www.al-apse.org and/or www.acdd.org when available.

Summer 2010 Conference, co-hosted by the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities, was a huge success! Approximately 250 individuals attended this year’s event held at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center. The conference got off to a great start with a pre-conference day on June 23. Denise Bissonnette was the guest speaker. Her presentation was titled “Beyond Traditional Job Development..The Art of Creating Opportunity”.

AL-APSE & ACDD Blazing New Trails - The Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery was the site of the first ever super conference on disability hosted by Alabama APSE and the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities. Just under 300 people attended this year’s event. The three day event included keynote speakers, a large variety of breakout sessions, self-advocate track,awards banquet and silent auction.

Byron White are expecting a great Alabama APSE conference this year. The organization has teamed up with the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities (ACDD) to plan what they think will be a “super” conference on disability.

Economy Puts Damper on Funding For Disabilities - The economy is hitting everyone these days, but individuals with disabilities are feeling the downturn more than most. MEGA Conference - The Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities (ACDD) will partner with Alabama APSE to host the first ever Alabama Disability Mega Conference. The dates are June 24—26. While planning is in the early stages, the site will be the magnificent Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery.

Alabama APSE Celebrates 10 Years at Annual Conference - Alabama APSE celebrated 10 official years as a state chapter during their annual conference in June. This year's conference "Employment for All: A Winning Platform" provided excellent training opportunities for the 209 registered participants.

AL-APSE Board Meets for Strategic Planning - The AL-APSE Board met during the month of April to begin developing a strategic plan in order to strengthen its board, its membership and its future as an organization in order to continue to provide quality training and leadership in the field of supported employment. Mr. Dale Verstegen who contracts with Georgia State University in their Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program facilitated the session which was held in beautiful Orange Beach, Alabama.

The Alabama APSE Board held their annual December meeting in Montgomery at The Capital City Club. In addition to discussing business matters, the board enjoyed a delicious lunch. Special guests at this year’s luncheon were the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, Mr. Steve Shivers and Mr. Jim Harris, III. Following lunch, the Board exchanged gifts.

ADRS and DMH/MR: Collaborating to Make Employment Happen: One of the first concurrent sessions at this year’s conference brought Steve Shivers Commissioner of ADRS and John Houston, Commissioner of the Dept. of MH/MR to discuss the growing partnership between these two state agencies.

Mobile, Alabama was the site of the 16th annual APSE conference July 24 - 27, 2005. This conference marked the largest attendance in recent years and the first time that a state chapter actually planned and hosted the conference. Individuals from all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico, Australia and Canada attended the conference. Read about the conference, awards, and view the photos.
