AL-APSE receives grant funding for 2007 to:

  1. Provide certificate based training to address the following objectives:
    1. Provide information on how individuals can better access supported employment in Alabama.
    2. Provide functions of an effective job developer, whether it be a job coach in the school system, job coach providing supported employment, a vocational rehabilitation counselor, or a self advocate.
    3. Increase skills and knowledge regarding the technical aspects of job coaching and presence of job coaches at the worksite so that employers are receptive of the need for onsite job coaching.
    4. Provide job developers information on effective marketing strategies.
    5. Increase employer awareness of the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities.
    6. Secure employer participation in training events.

  2. Regional training events will be conducted geographically throughout the state so that job developers, self-advocates, and others better understand laws related to hiring. Topics could include but not limited to:
    1. ADA
    2. Disability Disclosure
    3. Accommodations
    4. Technology

  3. Expand current website "Employers" section. This section will include topical information about hiring individuals with disabilities. In addition, the site will be equipped with an interactive space to allow employers to email technical assistance questions and obtain feedback.

  4. Collaborate with National APSE to customize marketing materials that have been developed for employers and policymakers. These materials include a multi-page brochure and DVD, "Choose Work". Alabama APSE Board members have reviewed both documents and are impressed with both the quality and content. APSE employed Mr. Neil Romano, Founder of America's Strength Foundation and an expert on the employment of persons with disabilities, to assist with the creation of these materials. His initial involvement with APSE and the development of these marketing materials began at the National APSE conference in Mobile in July, 2005. By purchasing the rights to these materials, Alabama APSE will be able to customize them and distribute a marketing message consistent with national initiatives on employment.

  5. Employ national experts/trainers to address effecting policy change.
